Juneau could see record heat this weekend

JUNEAU, Alaska — Juneau could see record high temperatures this weekend after a string of abnormally warm days that have left some residents grumbling about the heat. National Weather Service meteorologist Rick Fritsch says daytime highs this week have run as much as 10-14 degrees above normal at the Juneau airport. He says normal temps for this time of year are around 62 degrees. http://www.adn.com/2013/06/13/2938376/juneau-could-see-record-heat-this.html

Warm Ocean Causing Most Antarctic Ice Shelf Mass Loss

This is a really bad sign. All it takes is a few degrees shift in temp and the currents in the ocean start shifting = massive change in moisture and climate patterns. PASADENA, Calif. -- Ocean waters melting the undersides of Antarctic ice shelves are responsible for most of the continent's ice shelf mass loss, a new study by NASA and university researchers has found. Scientists have studied the rates of basal melt, or the melting of the ice shelves from underneath, of individual ice shelves, the floating extensions of glaciers that empty into the sea. But this is the first comprehensive survey of all Antarctic ice shelves. The study found basal melt accounted for 55 percent of all Antarctic ice shelf mass loss from 2003 to 2008, an amount much higher than previously thought. http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/earth20130613.html

How do oysters spell climate change relief? A-N-T-A-C-I-D

Oyster hatcheries are dropping the equivalent of Tums and other antacids into water to make it easier for naked mollusk larvae to build their shells. The remedy is working, for now, to keep hatcheries in business and oyster bars well stocked with the slimy delicacies, a hatchery scientist said. Heartburn for the shellfish industry comes from ocean waters turning ever more corrosive as they absorb a fraction of the carbon dioxide humans are pumping into the atmosphere. The acidification, in turn, makes it harder for oyster larvae to build their shells. http://science.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/12/18919646-how-do-oysters-spell-climate-change-relief-a-n-t-a-c-i-d?lite
